KNIT VS. WOVEN: DIFFERENCES BETWEEN KNIT AND WOVEN FABRIC

Knit fabrics and woven fabrics are now dominating the emerging garment sector. Most of the garment items you see are made of either of the fabrics. So, it is natural to get confused between two fabrics. In this article, you will get an insight into both fabrics. It will be helpful for you to decide the fabric that suits the best for your product.

Want to check your garment fabric?

Look carefully and determine the fabric type of your garment. If you see loops, that’s the knit fabric. There are two regular tests to check the garment fabric. These are so simple that you can determine the fabric within just a minute!

  • Wrinkle test: The basic way to assess your product is through wrinkle testing. Collect a sample of your fabric and grasp it. It is most probably knit if it bounces back with little implication on form or softness. If your test tugs remain in the textile, it is most probably a woven one.

  • Fray test: If you’re still confused, you can try the fray test. To avoid bending, the garment manufacturers use glue clusters or starch on the longitudinal borders of plain knits. The border of knits is frequently squeezed, but the width of woven substances lies in the fringe. So, if the sample will break up along its longitudinal edge, it must be woven fabric.

Differences between knit and woven fabrics

  1. Composition:  The main divergence between knitting and woven fabrics is the formation. While knits are made of a single yarn, woven fabrics are made of multiple yarns. You can find single thread interloping in knit fabric. On the other hand, woven fabric is made of several loops of looms.

  2. Stretchability: The weaving looms usually tighten the tension of the fabric compared to knitting machines. So, the tightly woven threads or independent yarns make woven textiles less extendable. This fabric is the best choice for covering padded furniture like a sofa or armchair. In knit items, a single thread creates less tension in the fabric. That makes knit fabrics well-stretchable. That’s why this fabric is chosen vastly for clothing.
  3. Stability: Woven garments are less shrinkable while washing. Due to the tension of the yarn and the characteristics of the fiber, woven garments are more durable. Further on, knit garments shrink in the frequent wash. In short, woven fabrics is more durable than knit garments.

  4. Comfort: Knit garments are softer and more comfortable as they are flexible. For breathable and natural feeling, almost all regular wear is made of knit fabrics. Although woven garments are not comfortable as knit items, this fabric can hold the shape of clothing year after year.
